Revealed: 2020 Color of the Year Hues

November 10, 2019

As usual, colors are all over the map again for 2020.  Two of the three main brands we use as our compass have selected... pastels!  This forecast is covering Pantone, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin-Williams.  We’ll also include a few less familiar brands’ indicators, which have some commonalities we'll point out with the three major brands. We’ll endeavor to wind through the myriad of predictions, and decipher how  the colors we see  will influence our choices in decor hues in 2020 through the next decade.

Each institution predicts color selections in their own way:

  • Pantone with Color of the Year for 2020 and through individual colors that work with this hue.
  • Benjamin Moore with a Color of the Year for 2020 and a palette that complements this hue.
  • Sherwin-Williams with a Color of the Year for 2020 and five palettes with related themes.
  • Dunn-Edwards Color of the Year 2020
  • PPG Color of the Year 2020
  • Behr Color of the Year 2020
  • Farrow and Ball Color of the Year 2020

The PANTONE Color of the Year 2020

Bleached Coral.  While usually we think of coral as fitting into the orange family, this color is somewhere between teal and turquoise- very “beachy” in feel. Rumor has it that Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year has been announced in recognition of the degradation of coral reefs.  (This is a bold environmental and political statement for which Pantone is receiving some criticism.  We consider this an appropriate response to the reality we're all experiencing.)

This color trend forecast offers seasonal inspiration, key color directives, suggested color harmonies across men’s, women’s, active, color cosmetics, interiors, industrial and multi-media design.

From inky blues and bio-luminous neons, to summer browns and seaweed greens, colors for 2020 display depth and complexity. Reflecting tribal behavior, each palette seems to live in a sea of its own, not necessarily related to the world around it. Color harmonies and cross-fertilization step forward to display harder color contrasts: turquoise with a lagoon grey or a bright orange with taupe. Mirroring the mood of Spring Summer 2020, they “offer a variety of options so you can explore all color depths from cool blue watery shades to the red-hot thermal bed of underwater volcanos.”  In Feng Shui terms, the hue brings our thoughts to nature and youth.

Benjamin Moore Color of the Year 2020

First Light

A fresh palette, revitalized spirit, and a soft, rosy hue blooming with potential. Benjamin Moore's Color of the Year 2020, First Light 2102-70, is the backdrop for a bright new decade.   In Feng Shui terms, this color brings with it thoughts of love, happiness, and romance!  Who doesn't want to infuse that in your life?

Note that this hue is used in this application on an accent wall.

Cabinets are painted in First Light, while walls are painted in Thunder.

The ten harmonious hues of the Color Trends 2020 palette, including First Light, deliver modern paint color pairings that combine optimism with understatement, a timeless way to lighten up. Note all the pastels below.

Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year 2020

The 2020 Color of the Year, Naval, is a rich navy that creates a calm and grounding environment infused with quiet confidence. 2020 is an empowering year of change that focuses on bringing your best self into the new decade. The next 10 years pave the way for wellness of the mind, body and soul – a clean palette for self-nurturance.

Giving a nod to Art Deco influences, Naval fuses the striking and bold opulence of Art Deco with our intrinsic need as humans to interact with nature. The inclusion of live greenery and mineral based materials like marble, allow us to create a natural sanctuary that encourages rejuvenation in your everyday life. It’s about slowing down to appreciate the beauty in nature and how you can bring it indoors.

We have to admit, the S-W color combinations below are impressive and very positive in attitude toward our future.  In Feng Shui terms, this color has to do with new growth, with a depth in mood and perspective.

Suggested Color Combinations with Naval:

Mantra (from S-W)

East meets West in this palette, and Nordic simplicity happily engages with the order and elegance of Japanese aesthetics to create a look that is the best of both worlds.  Neutrals are combined with whispers of pastels in this combo.

Heart (from S-W)

A confluence of genres and emotions permeates this palette. A unique fusion of iconic modern design mixed with an intergenerational boho vibe. These nine colors are a meditation on comfort, connection and the pleasures found in the everyday. Again, neutrals are combinted with softer hues.

Alive (from S-W)

Be present, positive, and relish the moments of this amazing life. Enjoy it in an authentic space touched by a palette of nurturing neutrals. Deeper and richer saturations are included in this combo.

These buoyant colors extend an invitation to jump into the game and have fun. Energetic and clever, this palette packs a lot of charm. Blakc, white & bright!

Haven (from S-W)

Like being welcomed home with open arms, this palette beckons to those seeking an oasis. Inspired by Earth’s seasonal cycles, it features richly subtle shades of sea, sand, forest and sky. Again, neutrals combine with quiet hues.

Dunn-Edwards 2020 Color of the Year

Minty Fresh captures the enthusiasm and optimism of a new decade. As we stand at the portal of a new era, infinite potential lies ahead. It’s invigorating, exciting — Minty Fresh!  This selection, although unique within the selected group, still holds true to the pastel plan for 2020- not teal, but close...

As a key color of the Dunn-Edwards 2020 color trends story, “Fresh and Free,” Minty Fresh exudes a calm, clean and crisp high point to the color palette — water-soft and mentholated, revived in oxygenating nuances, a reflection of purity. A subtle and relaxing pastel that conveys the partnership between technology and nature.

Dunn-Edwards Paints, an industry leader since 1925, is one of the largest U.S. manufacturers and distributors of architectural, industrial and high performance.  In Feng Shui terms, this hue brings forth tranquility, hope and freshness.

PPG’s Color of the Year 2020

Gone is the obsession with gray in the home, if PPG has any say in it. The Pennsylvania-based paint company announced its 2020 Color of the Year, and it's anything but neutral. The PPG 2020 Color of the Year is Chinese Porcelain.  Notice the commonality with S-W Naval, or BMoore's Buxton Blue?  There's not doubt it's a common color, and reflects a lighter version of Sherwin-Williams Naval!  In Feng shui terms, this color brings forth feelings of nature, with some depth of perspective.

Behr Color of the Year 2020

As we enter the next decade, we strive for vibrancy in life and shape it how we choose. As nature’s favorite color, Back to Nature is a restorative and revitalizing green hue that engages the senses and pairs well with other colors both inside and outside your home.  This hue is very similar to the next company's Color of the Year, and has similarities in both hue and name.  In Feng Shui terms, this hue brings forth feelings of tranquility, hope and freshness.

Farrow and Ball Color of the Year 2020

Farrow & Ball is a British manufacturer of paints and wallpapers largely based upon historic colour palettes and archives, selects Color By Nature as its 2020 Color of the Year.  The dazzling variety of the natural world is evident throughout a British museum, from rocks and precious stones to delicate butterfly wings.  The story of the “Colour by Nature” collection has been over two centuries in the making, becoming a treasured resource for scientists and artists alike.  We're happy to see green with some yellow mixed in returning to the forefront.  Currently, it's a tough color to find in accessories and such.
